Mt Vernon - Siding Upgrade
Currently, the southbound morning Amtrak Cascades train leaving Bellingham must wait for the northbound passenger train to pass before they can begin their run. In addition, the single track main line has few sidings long enough for a modern freight train to move out of the way of faster passenger trains. This project will upgrade and extend the siding track to hold full-length freight trains. This will allow earlier departures of southbound morning passenger trains leaving Bellingham, and provide more reliable passenger service. $3.3M of the budget is funded by FY2009 Residual Federal Funds.
